Cisco Meraki MX Security devices use Dynamic DNS (DDNS) to update DNS host records automatically when public IP addresses change. This functionality is useful because it allows administrators to configure applications such as VPNs using hostnames instead of IP addresses that may change over time.
DDNS hostname is associated with the network to which that MX device belongs. Moving it to another organization or network will cause the hostname to change.
Configuration :
+ Enable Routed Mode:
– To use Dynamic DNS on an MX Security device, it must be set to run at Routed mode. Can be checked at Security & SD-WAN > Configure > Addressing & VLANs in Dashboard. MX devices do not support internal Dynamic DNS (DDNS). passthrough or VPN concentrator mode.
+ Enable Dynamic DNS:
– Once the MX device is set to run in Routed mode, the Dynamic DNS section will appear at the bottom of the page Security & SD-WAN > Configure > Addressing & VLANs and has a link to the page Security & SD-WAN > Monitor > Appliance status.
– Section Security & SD-WAN > Monitor > Appliance status Select the pen icon next to Hostname, on the left side of the page.
– A dialog box will appear allowing Dynamic DNS configuration. Select enable.enable and enter public domain name, then select Update.
– After DDNS is enabled, you can check it works by using the following method, open command prompt and enter nslookup the DNS response will respond to the MX’s current public IP address.
