Hello everyone, in the following article I will guide you to back up data with the Shadow Copy function on Windows Server 2012.
1. Backup purpose:
As you know, backing up data is the first and most important job when managing the system, the main purpose of backup is:
– If the system crashes, there are facilities to recover data.
– Restore data in the fastest and most complete way.
2. Important ingredients:
First we need to learn about important components that need to be backed up:
* Data: lis the most important ingredient.
* System State: is the system’s Database, it includes:
– Boot files: files related to the boot process.
– Registry (in my opinion, this is the most important component).
– Com+ (dynamic link library – Component Service – environment for software development).
– Contains all windows objects (user, group, local group policy, etc.).
– Certificate Services (if installed).
– Cluster Database (if any). etc
– AD Database (in domain network)
– Sysvol (in domain network)
For example: If you accidentally delete a GPO, edit the registry or GPO, you can use system state to restore.
3. Commonly used backup tools:
NT Backup (server 2003R2 and earlier), Windows Server Backup (Server 2008 and later), Acronic (commonly used), Sysmantec Backup Exec, System Center Data Protection Manager (SCDPM).
4. Types of backup: there are 2 types of backup: File-level backup and Block-level backup.
– File-level Backup: This is the method used mostly in backup software. It will read the cluster sizes in the order they appear in the file. Typical software: Windows NT Backup.
– Block-level backup: Deeper intervention. It only reads blocks (sectors) in the order they appear on the hard drive. That is, it will bypass the file system in the HDH to work directly with the hard drive (Disk or Volume). Typical software: Windows Server Backup, Backup Exec System Recovery, Acronis.
5. Shadow Copy configuration instructions:
Shadow Copy is a feature available on the NTFS file system. Shadow Copy is set according to the time standard: (for example, we set: every 10 o’clock to automatically copy the files in the Share folder into a copy called Shadow Copy). It helps us solve the following 2 situations:
+ For old HDH servers, use NT Backup. The limitation of this tool is that when one or more files are being used during the backup process, the backup process will not be able to continue. When combined with Shadow Copy, if a file is found to be open, NT Backup will access the Shadow copy file for backup. Helps the backup process always work.
+ User wants to recover data (data.txt file). If the system has a backup, you must restore only to restore 1 file. Deploy Shadow Copy, helping users create copies according to user-set time standards so that they can restore data themselves.
* How to configure:
Go to C -> create folder Shadow -> data.txt (add content: “123”) -> save. Then Share the Shadow folder.
Right-click drive C -> Properties -> Shadow copies tab (by default this feature is disabled) -> Enable.
A notification panel appears, select yes.
After clicking yes, the Shadow Copy feature will immediately access drive C to find which folders and files are being shared and create copies at the time we enable it.
Then we configure the time that Shadow Copy automatically clones (if the configuration is not strict, the hard drive capacity will increase quickly, or if the clone configuration is during peak user access to the system, it will reduce performance). system).
Select Settings
Storage Area: choose where to store copies.
To set time -> select schedule, by default Windows sets 2 times:
+ 7am every day: to copy data from the previous afternoon
+ 12 noon: copy information arising from the morning.
Depending on the purpose, we adjust the schedule appropriately.
* Check:
Open Data.txt and edit it to “456” -> save
Open the Shadow Copies tab in drive C
(click create now to copy files immediately)
When you want to restore data to a certain point in time, go to Properties Data.txt -> Previous version tab (this tab is only available when the Shadow feature is enabled)
Select time -> Restore.
The process of installing Shadow Copy on Windows Server 2012 has been completed, I wish you success!
