CONFIGURATION SITUATION:
– Nowadays, IP phones are widely used in office environments, giving priority to higher voice traffic is an important thing to consider when designing a network.
– In a common situation during installation, the IP phone is connected at one end to the Zyxel PoE switch while connecting a PC or Laptop at the other end to bridge both devices. In this case, Voice VLAN is an important feature used to mark and prioritize voice packets from the IP phone, separately from data packets from the PC.
– In the following configuration guide, the goal to achieve is to separate traffic between IP phone and PC without having to install separate VLAN tags for them. The switch will add separate VLAN tags to voice and data packets when receiving them and then forward them to the uplink port.
CONFIGURATION FOR NEBULA CLOUD SWITCH:
– The following steps are applicable to the above supported switches Nebula Control Center.
1. Configure switch ports.
– In the example for Nebula switches, Data and voice VLANs are separated from the management VLAN. Go to the page following the link “Configure > Switch ports‘, select and change the ports connected to the IP Phone, and select the port type as ‘Access‘. Select PVID for these ports. PVID is used to tag data packets with VLAN ID. Next we will leave the feature “Voice VLANs” identifies voice packets for the switch.
*Note: The uplink port should be configured as trunk.
2. Set up voice VLAN.
– Go to page “Configure > Switch configuration. configuration” to configure Voice VLAN settings. Select the VLAN ID and OUI addresses of the phoe IP. OUI is the first 3 bytes of the MAC address provided by the manufacturer. Through the MAC address of the specified IP Phone, the switch can determine voice traffic based on that. Nebula cloud switch supports up to 6 vendor OUI.
– After saving the VLAN settings, all switches within the same Nebula site will then be able to confirm and prioritize voice traffic.
END:
– The tutorial shows the ease of configuring Voice VLAN on the Zyxel switches managed via cloud. Overall, separating VLANs and defining rules for data and voice achieved the goal of prioritizing voice traffic without having to add additional configuration on IP phones.
